Applications have officially opened for the 2026 Mastercard Foundation Associates Program. This is a 12-month paid internship and structured early-career development initiative created specifically to help young African university graduates make a smooth transition from education into meaningful, long-term employment.

The Mastercard Foundation itself runs and coordinates the program. Through it, selected Associates are matched with partner organizations across various African countries. During their placement, Associates gain hands-on experience through structured work roles, while also receiving guidance from mentors and access to professional development resources designed to build workplace skills and confidence.

According to the Mastercard Foundation, launching this program ties directly into their larger mission. The Foundation aims to expand opportunities so that young people across Africa can secure work that is not only available, but also dignified, stable, and personally fulfilling.

    Program Overview

The Associates Program is structured as a full 12-month paid internship placement. During that year, participants don’t just observe they get hands-on professional work experience in real organizational roles.

Beyond daily tasks, the program also invests in personal and career growth. Associates receive training focused on leadership skills and overall employability, so they’re better prepared for the job market. Each participant is paired with a mentor who provides ongoing career guidance and support throughout the internship.

The program also creates opportunities to connect. Associates network directly with partner organizations operating across different African countries, which helps them build professional relationships early. And the support doesn’t end when the 12 months are over the program includes career transition assistance to help Associates move into permanent employment after completion.
